OSCE finds "creative solutions" to circumvent Russia's veto

Members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have found creative solutions to avoid working with their Russian counterparts.

That's according to Euractiv, Ukrinform reports.

"To circumvent Russia's veto, OSCE members have come up with creative solutions to avoid having to work with their Russian counterparts," said US Ambassador to the OSCE Michael Carpenter.

In recent months, Russia has been obstructing the approval of the organization's budget, jeopardizing the activities of the 57-member security body. All decisions have to be made by consensus, which allows Russia to block those that are contrary to its interests.

Carpenter also added that since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the organization has managed to overcome "Russia’s obstructionism".

The U.S. Ambassador to the OSCE mentioned the Support Program for Ukraine, created after Russia vetoed the expansion of the OSCE field missions in Ukraine that existed before the war. This program is funded by voluntary contributions, and Russia cannot veto it.

The OSCE is the only European security platform that unites Europe, Russia, the United States and Ukraine and is mainly engaged in conflict prevention, peace monitoring and election observation.

As Ukrinform reported, Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sergiy Kyslytsya, explained why the UN Security Council did not block Russia's presidency in April.
