President of Czech Republic: Outcome of the war in Ukraine to determine global security architecture
The outcome of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine will have global consequences, as it will determine the entire future security architecture.
The relevant statement was made by President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“This conflict is important for our future, not only in Europe but worldwide, because its results will determine the global security architecture and the nature of international relations in general,” Pavel said.
The former army general and Chairman of the NATO Military Committee assessed the risk of further conflict as high, which might not only involve two neighboring countries (one of which is a nuclear-weapon state, and the other is a large country in Europe) but also spread to a number of other countries.
According to Pavel, the situation is rather serious and cannot be ignored.
Pavel compared Russia’s current actions with those of Nazi Germany during the Second World War: the killing of civilians and the destruction of civil infrastructure, numerous atrocities and war crimes.
“For this, Russia should be held accountable in court. Thus, we are calling for the creation of an International Tribunal to punish the crimes that must not go unpunished,” Pavel stressed.
Additionally, Pavel mentioned that Russia might not be the only challenge. In the longer run, China may become even more threatening, as Beijing seeks not equal cooperation with other countries but global dominance.
According to Pavel, the only way for the democratic world to deal with authoritarian regimes, such as Russia and China, is to be united, and not only within the EU or NATO, but to involve everyone around the world.
