G7 nations agree on need to continue supporting Ukraine - Scholz
Ukraine was among the top agenda issues during the discussions among the Group of Seven leaders in Hiroshima, Japan, where an agreement was reached to continue supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke of this following the first day of the summit on May 20, reports Ukrinform.
"We once again reaffirmed here that we would provide Ukraine with the required support for as long as it’s necessary, including humanitarian, financial support, as well as by supplying weapons. This is the broad consensus that the G7 nations have found on the issue. This is also important because the consensus contains the message that a just peace is possible only if Russia understands that they must stop this war and withdraw their troops," Scholz told reporters.
The chancellor added that it is about global support for Ukraine and that "everyone is ready for this."
He noted that the brutal war unleashed by Russia, which has already claimed an incredible number of lives and brought massive destruction to Ukraine, has implications for the whole world.
Scholz welcomed the participation in the summit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with whom he held "really intensive negotiations" recently in Berlin. According to the chancellor, good consultations have taken place and specific agreements have been reached on further sanctions against the Russian Federation.
"It is very important that we do everything we can to further enhance the sanctions already in place to deter Russia from pursuing this war. This is the understanding we have essentially reached here," said the head of the German government.
He specified that the package of European sanctions is discussed separately within the framework of the European Union.
As reported, the G7 summit is being held in the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky is also in town, attending the event.
