EU condemns destruction of Nova Kakhovka dam as 'new escalation'
The blowing up of the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant is another terrible testimony to the barbaric nature of Russia's war against Ukraine and a new round of escalation.
EU foreign policy spokesperson Peter Stano said this at a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday, June 6, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
"The destruction of Kakhovka dam brings the targeting of civilian infrastructure and civilians in Ukraine to unprecedented levels. The European Union condemns strongly this horrific and barbaric attack against such a crucial piece of infrastructure with terrible humanitarian and environmental consequences. It is obvious that this is happening in the context of Russia's aggression against Ukraine," he said.
According to him, this is a "new escalation" that demonstrates the entire terrible and barbaric nature of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
He said that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic would issue a joint statement that will reflect in more detail the position of the European Union regarding the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam by Russian invaders and the consequences of this crime.
