Speakers of six parliaments call on Vilnius summit participants to undertake to accept Ukraine into NATO

The heads of the parliaments of Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany and Poland have called on the participants in the NATO Summit in Vilnius to commit themselves to the fact that Ukraine will become a member of NATO.

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk said this on Facebook, according to Ukrinform.

"Today [on July 10] in Riga, the heads of the parliaments of Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany and Poland adopted an important joint declaration. This is the latest decision at a high parliamentary level regarding Ukraine's membership in the Alliance ahead of the NATO summit in Vilnius," Stefanchuk said.

He clarified that the speakers of the parliaments had called on the Vilnius summit participants to undertake the commitment that Ukraine will become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance and NATO will determine the path for the accession of the Ukrainian state.

In addition, the heads of parliaments called on the allies to work closely together to develop security commitments for Ukraine, which would in no way be an alternative to the country's membership in NATO and should not slow the progress of its Euro-Atlantic integration.

They also appealed to their partners to support the peace formula proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

At the same time, the speakers of the parliaments of Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany and Poland called on the Vilnius summit participants to continue coordinated measures to ensure Ukraine's urgent needs in military and defense equipment, focusing directly on air defense systems, long-range artillery and the necessary ammunition, tanks and fighter jets. They also called on NATO allies to help Ukraine strengthen its defense capabilities and potential, including land, sea and air components, until Ukraine fully restores its territorial integrity and sovereignty within the internationally recognized borders of 1991.

The NATO summit will be held on July 11-12 in Lithuania's capital, Vilnius.
