Australia at UN: War must end on Ukraine’s terms

Australia keeps standing with Ukraine, helping the nation to achieve peace on its terms.

That’s according to Australia’s representative Fiona Webster, who spoke at the UN General Assembly debate on the situation of the Ukrainian territories temporarily occupied by Russia, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

She noted that the ultimate goal was to help Ukraine end the war on its terms and in line with international law, adding that her country is working with partners to hold Russia accountable.

Ukraine “is fighting for the UN Charter and the international rule of law,” Webster said.

She voiced deep disappointment that the vital Black Sea Grain Initiative was not extended, calling on the Russian Federation to demonstrate its commitment to its developing country partners and allow the resumption of this vital trade.

“We must never accept a situation where larger countries determine the fate of smaller countries,” she stressed, voicing concern over the findings of the Human Rights Council’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry, that Russian Federation authorities have violated international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and committed a range of war crimes — including findings of willful killings, attacks on civilians, unlawful confinement, torture, rape and forced transfers and deportations of children.

Russian aggression must not be normalized, the Australian official stressed.

As reported earlier, Australia has been providing humanitarian, financial, as well as military aid to Ukraine.
