EU imposes new sanctions against Belarus

The EU Council imposed new restrictive measures against Belarus on August 3 in connection with Moscow's illegal invasion of Ukraine and in response to the Republic of Belarus' involvement in the aggression.

That's according to the European Commission's website, Ukrinform reports.

In particular, the new measures form a closer alignment of EU sanctions against Russia and Belarus and will help ensure that Russian sanctions cannot be circumvented through Belarus.

Thus, the ban on exports to Belarus of a number of particularly sensitive goods and technologies that contribute to Belarus' military and technical progress is extended.

The EU Council also implements an additional ban on the export of firearms and ammunition, goods and technologies suitable for use in the aviation and space industries. The amendments also align sanctions against Belarus with the sanctions regime against Russia.

"These restrictive measures are fast-tracked in view of the urgency linked to the fight against circumvention regarding certain highly sensitive goods and technologies," the statement said.

As Ukrinform reported, on June 23, the European Union adopted and made public the details of the 11th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. On June 28, Switzerland joined it.
