U.S. monitoring Wagner Group’s movements across Belarus - State Department
The United States is aware of the location of Russia’s Wagner Group fighters on the territory of Belarus and continues to monitor their movements and actions.
This was stated on Wednesday at a press briefing in Washington by U.S. Department of State spokesman Matthew Miller, Ukrinform's own correspondent reports.
"Of course, we’ve seen Wagner forces redeploying to Belarus," the State Department official noted in response to a request to comment on reports of a new camp being set up for Russian mercenaries in Gomel region.
He emphasized that the United States will continue to closely monitor Wagner Group’s actions against the interests of the country in which these forces are located. In addition, according to Miller, Washington will continue to take measures to hold them accountable.
"As we've said before the arrival of those forces in Belarus is another example of Lukashenko ceding further control and decision-making to the Kremlin contrary to the interests and wishes of the Belarusian people," noted the official.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, on Wednesday the United States slammed new sanctions on Belarus due to the regime's continued efforts to suppress the rights and freedoms of their citizens.
