New UK defence secretary names support for Ukraine among priorities

Newly appointed UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said that support for Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion would continue.

“As I get to work at the UK Ministry of Defence, I am looking forward to working with the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who defend our nation’s security. And continuing the UK’s support for Ukraine in their fight against Putin’s barbaric invasion,” Shapps posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The Secretary also thanked his predecessor, Ben Wallace, for his work over the past four years.

“I’d like to pay tribute to the enormous contribution Ben Wallace has made to UK defence & global security over the last 4 years,” he added.

On August 31, Ben Wallace resigned from the post of the UK Defence Secretary which he had held since 2019.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appointed Grant Shapps to the position.
