Supporting Ukraine in line with U.S. strategic interests - Vice President Harris
Strong support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression corresponds to the national interests pursued by the United States.
That’s according to U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, who spoke ahead of the meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, being held in Switzerland.
"President Biden and my support for the people of Ukraine is unwavering. We support Ukraine not out of charity, but because the people of Ukraine and their future is in our strategic interest," Harris said.
She emphasized that the US is interested in upholding international rules and norms, such as sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the international system “we helped create following World War 2."
"It is in the interest of the United States to defend democratic values and stand up to dictators. It is in our interest to stand with our friends, such as Ukraine," the vice president said.
Harris added that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are "resilient and effective fighting force, so admirably, one that has and will continue to impress the world”.
"This war remains an utter failure for Putin," she stressed.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, the inaugural Summit on Peace in Ukraine kicked off its work in Switzerland’s Bürgenstock Saturday afternoon with the participation of 100 delegations from 92 countries and eight international organizations.
