Former Kremlin prisoner explains why Turkey calls for ceasefire, peace talks

Turkey is calling for a truce and peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, based on the current situation and its own interests, in particular, the will to end the hot phase of the conflict in the Black Sea region.

Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, Nariman Dzhelal, said this in a comment to Ukrinform following his visit to Turkey.

"All those statements that the Turkish leadership sometimes makes regarding the reconciliation of the parties in the Russo-Ukrainian war are dictated by today's situation. I think that as soon as a situation arises where Russia weakens due to international pressure when Ukraine prevails, Turkey will have more opportunities to act more resolutely and concretely. This is a very volatile situation, and we should not expect anything more from Turkey," Nariman Dzhelal explained.

According to the former prisoner of the Kremlin, Turkey, which is geographically at the center of several large-scale conflicts, primarily seeks to stabilize the situation in the Black Sea region.

"Turkey, like others, is a pragmatic country that seeks to realize its interest and is ready to reciprocate if they are offered something useful. If Ukraine does this today, Turkey will continue to be our partner. And we, as representatives of the Crimean Tatar people, are ready to perform the function of an intermediary bridge or "substance" that can connect our states," said Nariman Dzhelal.

The deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people emphasized that Turkey provides real assistance to Ukraine, including military, supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, advocates the return of Crimea to Ukraine in accordance with international law.
