Zelensky: More contact needed with Trump's team

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the need for increased communication between his administration and the team of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

The head of state said this in an interview with the Japanese news agency Kyodo News, Ukrinform reports.

"We will maintain contact with Trump and his team until he assumes the full authority of the U.S. presidency. Once he is in the White House, we can discuss matters in greater detail. However, I believe there should be more interaction between our teams now. We need to prepare carefully for the coming year," Zelensky said.

He expressed hope that U.S. policy toward Ukraine would remain consistent under Trump's leadership.

"Of course, I hope U.S. policy does not change, and that it does not seek a compromise between the killer and the victim. Achieving a just peace through Ukraine's strong position is essential," Zelensky said.

He also underscored the importance of the U.S.-European alliance to Ukraine's security.

"Losing [that alliance] would be terrifying, but I am confident it won't happen," Zelensky said.

Donald Trump's inauguration as the next U.S. president is scheduled for January 20, 2025.
