Ukraine's MFA urges new Syrian government to reconsider ties with Putin's regime
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has called on Syria's next government to reevaluate its relationship with Putin's regime following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s Moscow-backed administration.
This was stated in a comment from Ukraine’s foreign ministry, as reported by Ukrinform.
“We urge the next Syrian government to reconsider its ties with Putin’s regime, which has caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Syrian citizens, including innocent women and children. We firmly believe that Syria’s long-term security depends on ending Russian presence in the country. Wherever Russian military or mercenaries are present, they bring only death, destruction, instability, and lawlessness,” the ministry declared.
The statement also reminded that Moscow compelled Assad’s regime to unlawfully recognize Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea and the temporary occupation of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which led Ukraine to sever diplomatic ties with Assad’s criminal regime in 2022.
“We hope that in the future, Syria will become a state that respects international law, including the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. This would pave the way for the restoration of bilateral relations and a full-fledged political dialogue between Kyiv and Damascus,” the ministry added.
Earlier reports indicated that Hadi al-Bahra, head of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, announced the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which had ruled Syria for 24 years.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that the fall of Assad’s regime in Syria demonstrates that Vladimir Putin always betrays those who rely on him.
