G7 foreign ministers reaffirm unwavering support for Ukraine

At a meeting in Canada, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) reaffirmed their steadfast support for Ukraine and emphasized the importance of security guarantees for the country after the war.

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this in a statement, Ukrinform reports.

"In this session, the G7 countries had a candid exchange of views on the situation in Ukraine three years after the start of Russia's aggression. The G7 ministers expressed their high appreciation for the US's efforts towards peace and pointed out the importance for the G7 to work together to have Russia act positively," the statement said.

The ministers reaffirmed the G7's unwavering support for Ukraine, while pointing out the significance of security guarantees for Ukraine.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya stressed that peace efforts in Ukraine must not set wrong precedents.

"Minister Iwaya welcomed the efforts for peace by the US and European countries, and pointed out that the way of peace in Ukraine affects not only Europe but the entire international order, including the Indo-Pacific region, and that they must not allow a situation to arise from which wrong precedents can be drawn," the statement said.

Additionally, Iwaya reaffirmed Japan's commitment to strengthening Ukraine's resilience by supporting its recovery and reconstruction through public-private partnerships.

The G7 includes the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, the United States, Japan, and the European Union. This year, Canada holds the G7 presidency.

The two-day G7 foreign ministers' meeting began on March 13 in Quebec, Canada. A joint communique is expected at the conclusion of the talks, which have focused on global peace and stability, with particular attention to Ukraine.
