Italy agrees to deploy troops to Ukraine only under UN auspices - Foreign Minister
The Italian government believes troops should be sent to Ukraine only to police a future ceasefire if they are deployed under the UN banner.
This was stated by Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Ukrinform reports with reference to ANSA.
"Do not send military on missions that are not from the United Nations, it is the only condition for us to send military" to Ukraine, said Tajani, who is also deputy premier, after the summit with Premier Giorgia Meloni, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, and Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini.
According to Tajani, the option involving NATO Treaty’s Article 5 to guarantee European security and the defense of Ukraine remains on the table.
He noted that there is a consensus in the Italian government on the position that Prime Minister Meloni will take at the Coalition of the willing summit in Paris on Thursday.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the Coalition of the willing summit on Ukraine will be held in Paris on March 27, with the participation of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
