Memorial to Holodomor victims unveiled in Toronto

A memorial to victims of Holodomor of 1932-33 in Ukraine was unveiled in Toronto, the largest city in Canada.

As an Ukrinform correspondent reports, several hundred people attended the official opening ceremony, including Toronto Mayor John Tory, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland and First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Stepan Kubiv.

"The Ukrainian community of Canada kept the memory of the Holodomor for many years, when it was concealed. It is a very important contribution and I am especially grateful to the senior members of our community who preserved this memory," Freeland said.

The minister also recalled Ukrainian political prisoner Oleg Sentsov illegally jailed in Russia. "We should mention Oleg Sentsov and think about Crimean Tatars. May the memory of all the victims live forever. Let’s continue to fight for those who suffer," Freeland said.

The sculptural composition is located at the Exhibition Place near the Toronto Airport and Lake Ontario quay.
