In January-October 2018, 52,452 tourists visited the Chornobyl exclusion zone, including 35,335 foreign nationals from 112 countries.

Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak wrote this on Facebook.

"Over the past three years, the perception of this territory has changed significantly, as evidenced by the number of tourists visiting the Chornobyl zone every day. A total of 52,452 tourists visited the exclusion zone in the first ten months of 2018, of whom 35,335 were foreign nationals from 112 countries," the minister wrote.

Semerak wrote he hopes that the completion of construction of a new safe confinement covering the destroyed unit 4 of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant will become a new stage in the development of the exclusion zone.

"It made it possible to transform the exclusion zone into an innovative science platform in the context of the development of renewable energy. We will continue our work," Semerak added.

As reported, the new safe confinement will be put into operation in December 2018.
