Archaeologists discover almost two kilos of silver coins in Kyiv
Archaeologists have discovered about two kilograms of silver coins on the territory of the Ancient Kyiv historic preserve, Director of the Department for Protection of Cultural Heritage at Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Nykoriak has said on his Facebook page.
"About two kilograms of silver coins denominated in one ruble, 50, 20 and 10 kopecks, [were found] in the basement of a building demolished in the 1970s, on the territory of the Ancient Kyiv reserve. The treasure was found by an archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine headed by Vsevolod Ivakin during archaeological research," he wrote.
According to the official, the coins were minted between 1817 and 1912. After restoration, they will be transferred to the Museum of Archeology at the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
According to one theory, a bank was located in the adjacent building, so it can be assumed that a bank employee lived there and hid the money "for a rainy day."
