UN report refutes allegations of migration crisis in Ukraine

From 2015 to 2019, the number of migrants from Ukraine has increased by about 200,000 people, which corresponds to the dynamics of Germany over the same period and is significantly lower than the indicators of the Russian Federation, Poland, and the UK.

Such data are provided in a new UN report, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, the number of international migrants of Ukrainian origin outside Ukraine was 5.9 million as of July 1, 2019.

In contrast, this indicator was estimated at 5.5 million in 1990, remained at 5.6 million during 1995-2005, 5.4 million in 2010, while 5.7 million Ukrainians permanently lived abroad in 2015.

Whereas in 1990 Ukraine occupied the 4th position in the world in the number of migrants (after Russia, Afghanistan and India), it ranks already 8th in 2019. This is underpinned by the rapid increase in the number of migrants in the world. Ukraine lags behind India (17.5 million), Mexico (11.8 million), China (10.7 million), Russia (10.5 million), Syria (8.2 million), Bangladesh (7.8 million), Pakistan (6.3 million).

From 2015 to 2019, the number of international migrants from Ukraine has grown by approximately 200,000 people. In contrast, the number of German migrants has also increased by approximately 200,000, migrants from Russia – by 300,000, from the United Kingdom – also by 300,000, from Poland - even by 400,000 (4 million in 2015 compared to 4.4 million in 2019).

At the same time, the number of migrants from Syria increased by 2 million people.

According to new UN report on migration, the number of migrants in the world has increased by 51 million people since 2010 and more than half of them live in only ten countries.
