Film about Holodomor wins award at Polish Film Festival in Gdynia

Historical drama Mr Jones co-produced by Ukraine, Poland and the UK has won award at the 44th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.

Director of Mr Jones, Agnieszka Holland, won the Golden Lion award, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

The film tells the story of Welsh reporter Gareth Jones, who arrived in the USSR in 1933 and investigated the events of the Holodomor man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine in 1932 and 1933. He was the first to raise the topic of the famine in Ukraine in the Western press.

The film was co-produced by Ukraine, Poland and the UK. The shooting took place in all three countries.

Ukraine spent UAH 26 million on the movie production, while its total budget is UAH 262.2 million.

The film stars James Norton (War & Peace TV series), Vanessa Kirby (Crown, Mission Impossible: Fallout), Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent Seven), Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones), Ukrainian actors Yakiv Tkachenko and Oleh Drach.
