Up to five million Ukrainians work abroad – Institute for Demography
According to the Ptukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, from three to five million Ukrainians work abroad.
"Three million people at least, five million people at most," Director of the Ptukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the NASU Ella Libanova said at the All-Ukrainian Forum "Ukraine 30. Human Capital" in Kyiv on July 20, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
She noted that the main factor in migration was inequality between countries. People, who decide to leave, feel certain that their life will be better abroad, and it's not just about salaries.
"If everything was measured only in money, this problem could be solved," Libanova said.
In 2020, the volume of remittances to Ukraine increased by 1.7%, or $200 million, up to $12.121 billion. According to the forecasts of the National Bank of Ukraine, remittances to Ukraine in 2021 will amount to $13 billion, up 8% compared to 2020.
