Thirty-two thousand tourists have visited Chornobyl Exclusion Zone this year
Thirty-two thousand tourists have already visited the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone this year.
“[As of August 11], 32,000 visitors came to us,” Kyrylo Harnyk, assistant director of the State Enterprise “Center for Organizational, Technical and Information Support for Exclusion Zone Management”, announced at a press conference on the preservation of landmarks of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
According to him, this year’s tourist numbers already surpassed those in 2018, when the Zone received 36,000 visitors for the whole year, while 124,000 visitors in 2019 are still a record.
“In 2019, we planned to increase the tourist numbers up to 1 million people a year by 2025 with a further increase but 2020 changed all our plans,” the assistant director added.
As reported, in early July, the Verkhovna Rada passed a bill at first reading providing for the imposition of fines, restriction or deprivation of liberty for illegal entry into the exclusion zone.
