Most Ukrainians are proud of their Ukrainian citizenship, according to a study entitled "Thirty years of independence: what achievements and problems of development the Ukrainians see and what they expect in the future," conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation together with the Razumkov Centre's sociological service.

The results of the survey were presented at Ukrinform on Thursday, August 19.

"In the 30th year of independence, we see that 72% of respondents are rather proud [to be citizens of Ukraine]," Democratic Initiatives Foundation analyst Petro Burakovsky said.

According to him, only 18.5% said they were "rather" or "definitely" not proud to be citizens of Ukraine.

According to the survey, the number of those who are proud or very proud of Ukrainian citizenship has been growing over the past 19 years.

Some 59% of respondents consider themselves primarily citizens of Ukraine. Identification with a settlement is also relatively common - 19%. Some 11% of respondents primarily identify themselves with residents of the region in which they live.

According to respondents, belief in a better future often unites people in Ukrainian society (36%).

"The strength of this factor can be underlined by the fact that common difficulties in life (29.5%) occupy in second place among the unifying factors. Also important are family and social feelings (27%), patriotic feelings (25.5%), as well as dissatisfaction with the authorities (22%), and the desire to overcome in difficulties life together (22%). Only 8% said that nothing unites Ukrainians at all," the survey said.

The nationwide survey was conducted from July 29 to August 4, 2021 in all regions of Ukraine, except for Crimea and the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. As many as 2,019 respondents aged 18 and older were interviewed. The poll's margin of error does not exceed 2.3%.

The study was conducted with the financial support of the MATRA programme of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine.
