Ombudsperson calls on intl community to put pressure on Russia over violations in Crimea
Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova has called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia over the persecution of Crimean Tatars in the temporarily occupied Crimea.
She reported this on Telegram following new searches and detentions of Crimean Tatar activists in the temporarily occupied Crimea, Ukrinform reports.
"The occupant country is again persecuting and intimidating Crimean Tatars. Searches in the houses of Ukrainian citizens are a gross violation of international norms, including Article 5 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, which guarantees everyone the right to privacy, and Article 8 of the Convention - the right to respect for private and family life,” the ombudswoman wrote.
She called on the international community to respond to the illegal actions of occupation authorities and increase pressure on Russia to stop violations of the rights of Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied Crimea.
In the early hours of September 4, Russian security officers carried out searches in the apartment of Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis Nariman Dzhelal in the village of Pervomaisk and then took him to the “Russian FSB department in the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol”.
Crimean Tatars Eldar Odamanov and Aziz Akhtemov disappeared following searches on September 3 and 4. Their whereabouts are still unknown.
