Deputy Marshal of Polish Sejm becomes mentor for journalist convicted in Crimea

As part of the advocacy campaign of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Deputy Marshal of the Sejm of Poland Małgorzata Gosiewska became a mentor for Marlen Asanov, a Crimean citizen journalist illegally convicted by the Russian-occupation authorities.

“I am sincerely grateful to Deputy Marshal of the Sejm of Poland Małgorzata Gosiewska for joining Ukraine MFA’s public advocacy mentorship initiative for citizen journalists, illegally detained by Russian occupants in Crimea, and her readiness to become a mentor for Marlen Asanov, sentenced to 19 years,” First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzheppar posted on Twitter.

Since September 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has been implementing the initiative of advocacy mentorship by public foreigners for citizen journalists who were illegally imprisoned and are currently held behind bars in Russia. In particular, American philosopher Francis Fukuyama joined the mentorship initiative.

On December 10, 2021, ZMINA Human Rights Center and PEN Ukraine launched the Solidarity words human rights program, in which 13 well-known Ukrainian writers and journalists, including Viktoria Amelina, Myroslava Barchuk, Olha Herasymyuk, Larysa Denysenko, Irena Karpa, Andriy Kurkov, Yuriy Makarov, Myroslav Marynovych, Vitaliy Portnikov, Iryna Slavinska, Ostap Slyvynsky, Maryana Savka, and Iryna Tsilyk, became personal ambassadors for 13 Crimean journalists imprisoned in the temporarily occupied Crimea and Russia.
