Court extends MP Medvedchuk's arrest until Sept 19
Lviv's Lychakivsky District Court has extended the arrest of Ukrainian MP Viktor Medvedchuk until September 19.
The court's press service said this in a statement.
"An investigating judge of the Lychakivsky District Court of Lviv has granted the request of a prosecutor of the Prosecutor General's Office and extended the term of detention, without determining the amount of bail, of V. V. Medvedchuk, who is reasonably suspected of committing criminal offenses provided for in Part 2 of Article 28, Part 1 of Article 111, Part 2 of Article 28, Part of Article 258-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, within the period of the pre-trial investigation, namely until September 29, 2022," the statement said.
On May 11, 2021, Ukraine's former Prosecutor General, Iryna Venediktova, signed suspicion notices for Opposition Platform – For Life Party MPs Viktor Medvedchuk and Taras Kozak, who are suspected of treason and attempted plundering of national resources in Crimea.
On May 13, 2021, Kyiv's Pechersky District Court selected the measure of restraint in the form of round-the-clock house arrest for Medvedchuk and ordered him to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. Kozak was put on the wanted list.
On August 20, 2021, Venediktova said the investigation into the treason case of Medvedchuk and Kozak was over.
On February 27, 2022, it emerged that Medvedchuk had escaped from house arrest.
On April 12, in a special operation conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine, Medvedchuk was detained. Lviv's Lychakivsky District Court chose a measure of restraint for him in the form of detention.
The Lychakivsky District Court also seized 154 assets of Medvedchuk and his wife, Oksana Marchenko.
On June 2, investigators of the State Bureau of Investigation completed a pre-trial investigation into Medvedchuk's case of treason (Article 111) and violation of the laws and customs of war (Article 438 of the Criminal Code). He faces up to 15 years in prison with or without confiscation of property.
