Explaining complex things in simple words: American assistance to Ukraine, visit of Josep Borrell, anti-mobilization protests

The Center for Strategic Communication and Information Security pursues efforts to provide a brief explanation to foreign audiences on the current topics of particular interest as regards Ukraine.

AMERICAN ASSISTANCE TO UKRAINE

On February 7, the U.S. Senate did not approve a package to strengthen the border and provide foreign assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

  • U.S. support is critical to ensuring Ukraine's resilience and achieving victory over the aggressor.

  • Unfortunately, the U.S. Congress once again failed to adopt a decision providing assistance to Ukraine totalling USD 60.1 billion.

  • After a negative vote in the Senate, majority leader Chuck Schumer developed a Plan B — a vote to help Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan separately from the border issue.

  • The vote for Plan B in the Senate was postponed to the afternoon of February 8.

  • Effective support for democracies is in the national interest of the United States. The international reputation of the United States also depends on it.

VISIT OF JOSEP BORRELL

On February 6-7, Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, visited Ukraine.

  • The EU is a reliable partner and ally of Ukraine, which ensures the protection of Ukrainians in the face of full-scale Russian aggression. Josep Borrell regularly visits Kyiv as a sign of solidarity.

  • On the second day of Josep Borrell's visit to Kyiv, the Russians launched a massive missile attack on the capital of Ukraine. This was a clear hostile move against the EU.

  • Borrell announced the EU Peace Fund reboot by the end of February to create new production facilities for military support to Ukraine.

  • The EU will provide Ukraine with 1.155 million rounds of ammunition by the end of 2024.

  • The EU High Representative noted Ukraine's outstanding achievements in the production of modern drones.

ANTI-MOBILIZATION PROTESTS

On February 6, residents of the Kosmach village in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast organized a checkpoint where cars were attacked. Two women and a girl were injured by the attackers.

  • The protests in Kosmach were caused by fake reports about visiting women giving out draft notices.

  • The anti-mobilization hysteria on social networks is incited by Russian special services. Their goal is to split Ukrainian society and destabilize the Ukrainian rear.

  • Mobilization is a vital process. Without a sufficient number of personnel at the front, it is impossible to contain the Russian onslaught.

  • Russia's goal is to destroy Ukraine, but to achieve this, the Russians first need a military victory.

  • Law enforcement officers initiated criminal proceedings under Art. 296, part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine on the fact of beating (hooliganism committed by a group of persons).
