Lviv doctors remove malignant kidney tumour from two-year-old girl
Doctors at the St Nicholas Children's Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv removed a giant malignant kidney tumour from a two-year-old resident of Ternopil, Mariia.
This was reported on Facebook by the First Medical Association of Lviv, Ukrinform reports.
"A huge kidney tumour weighing over 1 kg! And this is in a 2-year-old girl! The tumour had reached life-threatening proportions. In addition, it was malignant and could cause metastases. Specialists of St Nicholas Children's Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv began to save the child," the statement reads.
It is noted that the girl's tumour was discovered in May in Cherkasy when the girl was visiting her grandmother. An ultrasound showed a huge tumour on the right kidney: a nephroblastoma, a kidney tumour that is the most common malignant embryonic disease in children. That is, the tumour had been growing unnoticed along with Mariia since birth.
At the time of the examination, the tumour reached 20 centimetres and weighed more than a kilogram, while the child's weight was 12 kg. The tumour was pressing on the internal organs and could have caused fatal bleeding.
Cherkasy doctors referred the family to St Nicholas Hospital in Lviv. But it was impossible to operate on the girl immediately. First, it was necessary to destroy the tumour cells that had already entered the child's circulatory system. Therefore, doctors urgently prescribed chemotherapy for the little patient.
After chemotherapy, Mariia underwent surgery. The tumour was separated from the duodenum, diaphragm, liver, colon and inferior vena cava. The girl's right kidney was also removed.
The hospital noted that the three-hour operation was successful. The girl was prescribed another course of chemotherapy to destroy tumour cells that may still be circulating in her blood.
As reported by Ukrinform, in June, doctors at St Nicholas Children's Hospital in Lviv spent seven months nursing a baby girl who was born prematurely and weighed only 600 grams.
