Ukrhydroenergo, AECOM to work on restoring hydropower generation in Ukraine
Ukrainian hydropower plants’ operator Ukrhydroenergo and the U.S.-based AECOM signed a memorandum outlining the intentions to implement projects aimed at supporting the rehabilitation and reconstruction of hydropower facilities affected by war.
According to the memorandum, AECOM will act as a technical consultant for the restoration of Ukraine's hydropower infrastructure, Ukrhydroenergo’s press service reports.
Due to the constant shelling of energy facilities by Russia, Ukraine's power system has suffered critical damage and capacity losses, which makes cooperation between Ukrhydroenergo and AECOM “important in restoring Ukraine's fuel and energy sector”.
"AECOM has many years of professional experience in the development, design and reconstruction of hydropower facilities and dams around the world. Our partnership and cooperation will be another important step in the restoration of Ukraine's damaged energy infrastructure in general and hydropower generation in particular,” said Ihor Syrota, CEO Ukrhydroenergo. “Today, the restoration, protection and preparation of energy facilities for winter remain a priority for Ukraine. I am grateful to the international partners who are involved in the recovery. This will speed up the recovery process.”
In addition, the signing of the memorandum will help create incentives and guarantees at the state level to attract investment and innovative technologies in the energy sector.
“We are honored to partner with Ukrhydroenergo as we extend our role in supporting the reconstruction of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure,” said Troy Rudd, AECOM’s chief executive officer. “Hydropower is vital to Ukraine's energy supply, and our decades of expertise in this key renewable energy source positions us to support the nation in delivering and sustaining resilient electricity to millions. As leaders in the dams and reservoirs sectors, our teams look forward to bringing the necessary energy advisory and disaster recovery skills to meet Ukrhydroenergo’s complex hydropower objectives.”
Memo: AECOM has decades of experience in the development and design of hydropower and dam projects, providing comprehensive planning, feasibility, design, environmental studies, permitting and licensing support, construction, project management, and operations and maintenance services to hydropower clients worldwide. It is worth noting that the company also has experience in Ukraine, including acting as an advisor to the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development on infrastructure development as part of the Ukraine recovery effort and a partner in the reconstruction of Boryspil International Airport.
