Ukrainian serviceman Skakun blows up Henichesk bridge to stop advance of tank column
According to Ukrinform, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced this on Facebook.
"On this difficult day for our country, when the Ukrainian people are repelling the Russian occupiers in all directions, one of the most difficult places on the map of Ukraine was the Isthmus of Perekop, where a separate marines battalion was one of the first to meet the enemy," the statement said.
To stop the advance of the tank column, the decision was made to blow up the Henichesk road bridge.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said that Vitaliy Skakun, an engineer of the separate battalion, volunteered to perform this task. The bridge was planted, but he did not have time to leave.
According to his comrades, Vitaliy got in touch and said that he was blowing up the bridge. An explosion was heard immediately. "Our comrade died. His heroic deed significantly slowed the enemy's advance, which allowed the unit to redeploy and organize the defense," the statement said.
On February 24, Russian troops seized the Kakhovka HPP and bridges across the North Crimean Canal, and all government agencies in the Henichesk district came under the control of the invaders.
