Japan to impose sanctions on Russia’s central bank

Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida said this on Monday following a phone conversation with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrinform reports, referring to Reuters.

Kishida also said Japan would impose sanctions on Belarusian individuals and organizations including President Alexander Lukashenko, as well as limit exports given the country’s “evident involvement in the invasion” of Ukraine.

As Ukrinform reported, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone conversation with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Japan will allocate $100 million to the already approved aid of $100 million.

Previously, Japan supported the decision of Western countries to block Russian banks from accessing the SWIFT system. The country will also impose sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and provide Ukraine with $100 million in emergency humanitarian aid.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine and launched a large-scale invasion. Martial law was imposed in Ukraine and general mobilization was announced.
