President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that the Russian military, which is shelling Zaporizhzhia NPP, must be stopped immediately, otherwise Europe will face a nuclear disaster.

The president said this in his video address posted on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.

"The Russian military must be stopped immediately. Tell your politicians. There are 15 nuclear units in Ukraine. If there is an explosion, it will be the end to all of us,” he said.

He added that only immediate European action could stop Russian troops.

"Prevent the death of Europe from the disaster at a nuclear power plant," Zelensky said in his address.

As Ukrinform reported, overnight into Friday, a fire broke out at Zaporizhzhia NPP after it was shelled by Russia’s heavy weapons. There was a hit on the first power unit. A nuclear threat was declared.

On March 2, 2022, Energy Minister of Energy German Galushchenko, together with the heads of the SNRIU and Energoatom, appealed to the IAEA Director General Mr. Grossi to request that NATO enforce the A2/AD zone over Ukraine (no-fly zone).

On the first day of a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, February 24, Russian troops seized the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
