The fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been extinguished, but the situation remains difficult.

According to Ukrinform, Enerhodar Mayor Dmytro Orlov said this on Telegram.

"The situation remains difficult, but the fire at the Zaporizhzhia NPP has really been extinguished," he wrote.

Orlov added that Russian troops had stopped firing on the plant from three o'clock.

"The whole world community is with us now," the mayor said.

Early on Friday, a fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia NPP as a result of heavy weapons shelling by the Russian army.

One shell hit the first power unit, Zaporizhzhia NPP spokesman Andriy Tuz said.

Energoatom issued an appeal to the world community warning that the shelling was "a violation of the nuclear and radiation safety of Europe's largest nuclear facility, which could have serious and tragic consequences for the world."

Zaporizhzhia NPP said that Chechen fighters broke into the territory of the plant and wanted to lay mines at the plant.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said that the fire broke out outside the NPP, in the building of the training center. As of 05:55, the fire was contained in an area of 2,000 square meters.

The State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation said the main equipment and power units of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remain intact.

The plant's third power unit was disconnected from the single power grid (only the fourth power unit is operating).
