The heads of Ukraine's regional councils are asking the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to close the sky over Ukraine to Russian aircraft.

"Together with fellow heads of regional councils of Ukraine, we appealed to NATO member states with a request to close the sky over Ukraine to Russian military aircraft. We also ask NATO to help Ukraine receive fighter aircraft aid as soon as possible," reads the document published on the Facebook page of Head of the Lviv Regional Council Iryna Hrymak.

The heads of the regional councils, as representatives of the Ukrainian people, who are defending their land and the whole world from Russian aggression, reminded our partners that thousands of peaceful Ukrainians died over the 10 days of the war, including hundreds of children.

"Destroyed houses, social infrastructure facilities: hospitals, educational institutions, food industry. These destructions were caused by Russian military aircraft raids and missiles indiscriminately fired at Ukraine," the statement reads.

As reported, NATO adopted a decision not to close the sky over Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky said that by refusing to take such a step, NATO leaders gave Russian troops green light to continue bombing the Ukrainian territory.

On February 24, Russian president Putin declared war on Ukraine and launched a large-scale invasion. Russian troops are killing civilians, shelling and destroying key infrastructure. Missiles hit Ukrainians' homes.
