Invaders forcibly mobilize men on temporarily Russian-controlled outskirts of Mariupol
"According to local residents, the mobilized men will be used as 'cannon fodder' in street battles in the city to shield the enemy army and terrorists of the so-called 'DPR'," Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova posted on Telegram.
In addition, Denisova noted that the invaders had begun to detain men at a checkpoint in Vasylivka, Zaporizhzhia region, four days ago.
"The census of the male population has begun. They have not been served with mobilization notices yet. These men are likely to be forced to fight for the Russcist army units," the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights added.
According to the Ukrainian Ombudsperson, forced mobilization in the occupied territories violates Article 51 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, which strictly prohibits an occupying power from forcing protected persons (those who find themselves in the hands of a party to the conflict or occupying power of which they are not nationals) to serve in its armed or auxiliary forces.
"I appeal to the UN Commission to investigate human rights violations during Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the expert mission set up by OSCE participating States under the Moscow Mechanism to take into account these facts of war crimes and human rights violations in Ukraine," Denisova added.
