EU to provide EUR 500M more in military support to Ukraine – Borrell
The relevant statement was made by EU High Representative Josep Borrell ahead of the G7 Foreign Affairs Ministers meeting in Weissenhaus, Germany, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“This is the seventh meeting of the G7 [Foreign Ministers] since the Ukrainian war started. And I am sure that we will come out with a strong message. The recipe is clear – more of the same. I mean, more support to Ukraine, including military support. I will announce that we, the European Union, we will provide a new tranche of 500 more million [EUR] to support the military of Ukraine. It will make about EUR 2 billion in total,” Borrell said.
In his words, this EUR 500 million will be allocated for heavy arms, including armored vehicles, tanks, heavy artillery, ammunition, and the things needed for the war. But, this sum is not enough to provide a lot of fighter jets.
Borrell believes the G7 Foreign Affairs Ministers meeting will give a new impetus for military support to Ukraine, put more pressure on Russia with economic sanctions and continue working on Russia’s international isolation. The G7 Foreign Affairs Ministers will consider countering the disinformation about the consequences of the war, on energy and food prices around the world, and present a united front to continue supporting Ukraine.
“This is going to be, I am sure, the outcome of this meeting,” Borrell stressed.
A reminder that, on February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, starting a war.
The European Union expressed solidarity with Ukraine and started to provide effective political, economical, financial, humanitarian and military assistance to Ukraine. Five packages of economic and individual sanctions against Russia have already been introduced. The sixth package of sanctions is expected to affect the import of Russian energy resources.
