Canada calls on Russia to respect rights of Ukrainian PoWs
That’s according to a tweet by the country’s foreign ministry.
“Canada is concerned by reports that Russia and its proxies intend to try prisoners of war before a so-called "international tribunal." We urge Russia to comply with its int’l law obligations & to respect all members of Ukraine’s armed forces’ right to be treated as PoWs,” the foreign ministry tweeted.
As reported earlier, Russian occupation authorities in Mariupol are planning to hold sham trials of captured Ukrainian soldiers.
Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, said that by pursuing such a show trial, Russia will cut itself from the path toward any negotiations.
A UN human rights spokesperson has once again called on Russia to provide independent monitors access to all persons held by the Russian Federation in relation to the ongoing war.
