Ombudsman calls on UN, Red Cross to punish Russia after video of execution of Ukrainian soldier
According to Ukrinform, he wrote about this on Telegram.
"The Russian occupiers have once again posted a video of the brutal murder of a Ukrainian prisoner, who was allegedly beheaded with a knife. In addition, similar publications appeared on the CNN resource," he noted.
According to Lubinets, "from the point of view of humanity and philanthropy , can any army in the world kill prisoners of war and then distribute this video to the public? Do such actions add honor to such an army? This is a rhetorical question."
"However, there is no talk of human virtue on the part of the Russian Federation at all. What is this then, if not another proof of the genocide of the Ukrainian people? They publish videos, distribute them, and write horrible comments that express deep hatred for Ukraine and Ukrainians," the ombudsman emphasized.
In his opinion, the Russians are doing this to create content for a domestic audience in order to strengthen anti-Ukrainian narratives in society.
Also, according to the Commissioner, this is a "baptism of blood". "Most likely, Russian commanders give orders to their subordinates to perform such actions and film everything," he said.
"This is an element of intimidation of their military, first of all, so that they do not surrender to Ukrainian captivity and think that they will be treated the same way. It is also used as compromising evidence that there is no turning back and that they will have to wage this war of aggression to the end," Lubinets said.
As the ombudsman emphasized, "the public execution of a prisoner is another proof of violation of the Geneva Conventions, international humanitarian law, and violation of the fundamental right to life!"
"As the Ombudsman of Ukraine, I have sent letters to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, the UN Secretary-General, and the International Committee of the Red Cross to do everything possible to ensure that the perpetrators are punished for every war crime! And also to have this case separately recorded in all reports of international organizations," Lubinets said.
He also demands that the issue of unworthy behavior towards a prisoner of war be separately considered by the UN Human Rights Committee.
