OHCHR confirms 8,534 civilian deaths in Ukraine since war-start
That’s according to an OHCHR report published on Tuesday and seen by Ukrinform.
From 1 to 17 April 2023, a total of 324 casualties were confirmed: 85 killed and 239 injured, mainly due to the use of explosive weapons with wide area effects, mines, and explosive remnants of war.
The actual death toll is believed to be much higher, as information from some zones of heavy hostilities is delayed and many reports remain unverified. This applies, in particular, to Mariupol, Lysychansk, Popasna, and Sievierodonetsk, where numerous civilian casualties were reported.
As Ukrinform reported earlier with reference to the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, Russia is also holding at least 20,000 Ukrainian civilians hostage.
