Zelensky: Russia has been using cluster munitions against Ukraine for many years

The decision to provide Ukrainians with such munitions is a matter of justice because the Russian Federation has been using them continuously for many years, Zelensky said during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Vilnius, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Russia constantly uses cluster munitions in our territory, fights exclusively on our land, kills our people, uses cluster munitions for many years, constantly. The help that we can get from the USA regarding the decision on cluster munitions is for use purely against military targets, purely in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Their use is completely controlled and they are not used anywhere else. There must be justice," Zelensky said.

He emphasized that the Russians have been occupying Ukrainian territory for nine years, killing people, and Ukraine has the right to defend itself.

"It’s about justice – we defend ourselves without using appropriate weapons to target the territory of other states," the President emphasized.

Zelensky thanked U.S. leader Joe Biden for the decision to provide Ukraine with cluster munitions, adding that it was a challenge for him and not everyone in the US supports it.

At the same time, the Head of State added that Ukraine also needs long-range weapons.

As reported, the U.S. Department of Defense announced last week a new $800 million security assistance package to Ukraine, which includes cluster munitions.
