Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu expressed hope that more than 60% of Ukraine's grain exports could transit through his country.

He said this on Friday after a meeting with Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal in Bucharest, Ukrinform reported citing Reuters.

"We hope that over 60% of the total volume of Ukrainian grain exports will transit Romania," Ciolacu said.

He said Romania was trying to improve its connecting infrastructure by rail, road, river and sea, as well as at border crossings.

Ciolacu also said Romania, which is one of the EU's largest grain exporters, would balance efforts to boost the transit of Ukrainian grain to international markets to protect local farmers.

Earlier this month, Romanian Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu said European Union and NATO state Romania aimed to double the monthly transit capacity of Ukrainian grain to Constanta to 4 million tonnes in the coming months.

As reported, Romania and Ukraine have agreed to build a new checkpoint across the Ukraine-Romania border. It is planned to be located between the settlements of Bila Tserkva (Ukraine) and Sighetu Marmației (Romania).
