London offers Scholz solution on Taurus supplies to Ukraine - media
That’s according to Handelsblatt, Ukrinform reports.
According to the report, the UK offered Germany a way out of the deadlock in the debate on the supply of the Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. The federal government could export the Taurus to the UK, and then the government in London would instead supply Ukraine with Storm Shadow cruise missiles, the newspaper reported, citing diplomats and government officials. The proposal was submitted several weeks ago. However, the chancellor's office is yet to comment on it.
With its idea of a "ring exchange", the UK is obviously trying to serve as a mediator but this is unlikely to solve the problem because in the end, Ukraine will still not receive Taurus missiles it has been asking for months, the report reads. In particular, the head of the Bundestag Defense Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, noted that the exchange would make no sense because the Storm Shadow is not an equal replacement.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government continues negotiations with the German government about the possible delivery of Taurus missiles, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in an interview with Bild. He assured that Ukraine does not need the system for attacking Moscow. The actual objective is to destroy Russian military infrastructure on temporarily occupied territories, he stressed.
