Lithuanian volunteers come under fire in Pokrovsk

A group of Lithuanians transporting aid to Ukrainians was injured during shelling in eastern Ukraine this week.

It is noted that one Lithuanian citizen had his leg amputated, the rest received minor injuries and plan to return to their country on their own, said Valdas Bartkevičius, who was transporting the aid with the victims. According to him, the vehicles they used to come to Ukraine need to be repaired.

"A man's leg was amputated, and now he... He is in intensive care, but his condition is stable. The other three people were shell-shocked, one received a hand injury, but there is no danger to their lives," he said. One of the wounded Lithuanians, Sigitas Maliauskas, confirmed to 15min on Tuesday evening that a group of people transporting aid to Ukraine, which is resisting the Russian invasion, came under fire in Pokrovsk, Donetsk region.

On Wednesday, Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas told reporters that the condition of the injured was stable and they were in a hospital in Dnipro.

The country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the embassy in Ukraine is aware of the incident and is in contact with the victims to ensure their rights are protected and they return to Lithuania safely.

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said that for security reasons it could not provide any information about the incident.

As reported, the third Estonian volunteer soldier Martin Jaeger was killed in the war in Ukraine.
