Biden's withdrawal creates new campaign dynamics - Atlantic Council expert
He said this to Ukrinform, commenting on Biden's announcement to withdraw from the race.
According to the expert, there is a high probability that Vice President Kamala Harris will become the Democratic nominee.
"But perhaps there will be an open vote of all delegates [during the Democratic National Convention in August] and some other strong candidates may be identified," Karatnycky noted.
But in any case, attention will now shift "from Biden's advanced age to fundamental issues, including the age and health of Trump, who is also 78 years old, and at the end of his term he would be a year older than Joseph Biden," who is now 81, the expert added.
According to Karatnycky, a younger and more dynamic candidate, who will enjoy Biden's support and build on all the achievements of the Democratic administration in recent years, as well as highlight some of Trump's own weaknesses, could significantly change the dynamics of the race.
"This is a courageous act by President Biden, which creates completely new circumstances in the election campaign," the expert said.
As Ukrinform reported, Biden refused to run for president and suggested that Democratic Party supporters support the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris.
