The Center for Strategic Communication and Information Security pursues efforts to provide a brief explanation to foreign audiences on the current topics of particular interest as regards Ukraine.

PRESIDENT'S STATEMENTS

On August 27, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, held a press conference with the Ukrainian media and voiced a number of key theses.

  • In September, Ukraine will present a victory plan to U.S. President Joe Biden and both U.S. presidential candidates. The Second Peace Summit is also being prepared with the inclusion of the energy issue on the agenda.
  • Ukraine does not need foreign lands and citizens – that is why Ukraine does not occupy the territory of the Russian Federation but conducts a defensive operation there to prevent the occupation of its territory. In this way, the plans of the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernihiv regions were thwarted.
  • Russia has occupied 27% of the territory of Ukraine and seeks to capture the entire Donetsk region. However, the Defence Forces will not allow this to happen. Kyiv will not cede territories during the negotiations. Negotiations with Putin are meaningless.
  • Ukraine needs to return 7.5 million of its citizens from abroad. This is one of the goals of the future Ministry of Unity.
  • The Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief recently approved a format for working with families of prisoners of war to coordinate lists.
  • The agreement on the transit of Russian gas will not be extended.
  • Ukraine has conducted a successful test of its first ballistic missile.

IAEA MISSION TO THE KURSK NPP

Following the IAEA mission's visit to the Kursk NPP, Director General Rafael Grossi stated the “danger of a nuclear incident” due to fighting near the plant.

  • Ukraine does not pose a threat to the Kursk NPP. Kyiv takes a responsible approach to the problem of nuclear and radiation safety, having its own nuclear facilities.
  • The only threat to the Kursk NPP is possible Russian provocations aimed at blaming Ukraine and blackmailing the IAEA and the world with a new man-made disaster.
  • It was not Ukraine, but rather Russia, that irresponsibly started hostilities near the Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia NPPs, and now continues the occupation of the last one, ignoring all IAEA decisions.
  • We recommend the IAEA to pay more attention to nuclear energy facilities in Ukraine, which are threatened by the actions of the Russian army.
  • We hope that the Kremlin will not succeed in turning the IAEA into a blind tool of provocations and blackmail in the interests of Russian aggression.

ENERGY SECURITY OF UKRAINE

JSC NNEGC Energoatom is preparing to restore the Chyhyryn NPP in the Cherkasy region.

  • Nuclear energy is the basis of Ukraine's electricity generation; therefore, the development of the nuclear industry through the construction of new nuclear power plants is Ukraine's no-alternative course towards energy independence. This course is enshrined in the Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2050.
  • Getting rid of the Russian monopoly in the field of nuclear energy, Energoatom together with its U.S. partners, strives to modernise and replenish the nuclear park of Ukraine with new AR1000 reactors of the III+ generation, in particular, considering the destruction of TPPs and HPPs as a result of Russian missile strikes.
  • Ukrainian energy engineers are actively working on finding new sites for the construction of new NPP capacities.
  • Chyhyryn NPP is an unfinished project of the 1980s that can serve as a launching pad for the construction of four new power units based on American AR1000 technology, which is safe, environmentally friendly, wand has the ability to manoeuvre.
  • The Chyhyryn City Council has already granted permission to develop a land management project regarding the allocation of land plots for the use of JSC NNEGC Energoatom.
