A 25-year-old Belarusian volunteer fighter, known by the call sign "Gaz," has died while serving in Ukraine as part of the International Legion.

That's according to Belsat, Ukrinform reports.

Friends of the fighter shared the information on social media, with Nasha Niva noting that he has already been buried.

Born in Novopolotsk, Belarus, "Gaz" moved to Moscow at the age of 16 to live with his father, a Russian citizen. He held dual Belarusian and Russian citizenship. Before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he worked as a commercial director at an auto parts company in Moscow and was not politically active.

In an April interview, "Gaz" revealed that the overwhelming presence of war propaganda in Russia prompted him to return to Belarus in August 2022. It was there that he embraced his identity as a Belarusian patriot. By late 2023, he decided to join the fight for Ukraine, submitting his application to the International Legion.

"I am very glad that I made such a choice. The only thing I regret is that I did not go to Ukraine earlier," he said.

His decision to fight for Ukraine strained family relations. His father, a Russian citizen, disapproved and ultimately cut ties with him.

Since 2014, approximately 60 Belarusian fighters have died defending Ukraine's independence. Many remain unnamed to protect their families from potential persecution in Belarus.
