The refinery holds strategic importance for the Russian military, as it supplies fuel to the Black Sea Fleet and military infrastructure in southern Russia. It plays a key role in the logistical chain for fueling military equipment and aircraft.

Earlier, on February 26, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces confirmed an attack on the Tuapse oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai.
