Unstable peace would help Russia prepare for another attack, not only on Ukraine - Dombrovskis

The European Union welcomes progress toward ceasefire while warning against an unstable ceasefire that would only allow Russia to plot another attack on Ukraine or an invasion of another European state.

That’s according to Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commissioner for Economy, Implementation and Simplification, who spoke at a briefing during a visit to Kyiv on Thursday.

“The EU welcomes a move towards ceasefire and towards the peace process.  We have always emphasized that what we need is a just and lasting peace,” stressed the commissioner.

An unstable peace, Dombrovskis believes would just allow Russia “to regroup and start attacking Ukraine again or start attacking other European countries”.

“There cannot be negotiations about Ukraine without Ukraine,” stressed the commissioner. “Those are the principles which we are following as regards peace negotiations.”

As Ukrinform reported, on March 18, U.S. President Donald Trump had a phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The Trump administration said the Russian side had agreed to a partial ceasefire on energy and infrastructure facilities in Ukraine as part of the initiative proposed by the U.S. to establish peace in Ukraine.

On March 19, during a press conference alongside Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia, which launched strikes at Ukrainian energy and civil infrastructure immediately after the agreement between Trump and Putin was announced to stop the corresponding air strikes, cannot be trusted.

After a call with Trump, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine agreed to halting attacks on energy and civil infrastructure.

At the same time, Zelensky believes Russia will continue launching strikes on Ukraine until a document on a partial ceasefire is signed. He expressed hope that the agreement could be reached during the talks in Saudi Arabia.
