Denmark to deploy military battalion to Latvia
According to Reuters, cited by Ukrinform, the announcement was made by Danish Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus.
"Denmark's military will deploy a battalion of 850 troops to NATO member Latvia in the autumn, taking over from a Swedish contingent that was stationed in the region," Bruus said.
Reuters notes that the move reflects the growing determination of European countries to take greater responsibility for their own security. This comes amid criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently accused European NATO members of failing to provide adequate support in the conflict with Iran and announced plans to withdraw troops from Germany.
"It's important that we play our part in deterring Russia. Everyone can see how the situation is unfolding, and it's obviously a serious matter," Bruus told reporters after a closed briefing for Danish lawmakers.
As Ukrinform previously reported, Denmark became the first NATO country to invest directly in weapons production on Ukrainian territory.
