Ukraine to seek compensation from Russia for rights abuse victims - justice minister

This was stated by the Minister of Justice, Denys Maliuska, who spoke on the air of the national telethon, Ukrinform reports.

"The European Court of Human Rights established the illegal expropriation by the Russian Federation of property belonging to citizens and private legal entities. State property is not protected by the ECHR, but private property is. Therefore, this opens the path for us to further gather information on those who were affected in the territory of Crimea and ask the court to award the amount of compensation related to the violation of human rights," said the head of the Ministry of Justice.

According to Maliuska, after the ECHR ruling, it will essentially be about determining the amount of damage inflicted by Russia from 2014 to September 2022 on the territory of Crimea.

"As a state, we will collect information on the amount of damage caused and the persons affected. We will determine the amount required as compensation, with further distribution of funds among the victims," ​​he said.

According to the minister, the next stage of the legal struggle should be the creation of a mechanism that would force Russia to fulfill its obligations.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, on June 25, the ECHR handed down the ruling on the merits of the first interstate case "Ukraine v. Russia (regarding Crimea)", recognizing numerous human rights violations in the temporarily occupied Crimea by the aggressor state.

Since 2022, Russia has stopped participating in ECHR proceedings, although it remains responsible under rulings on complaints filed before September 2022.
